What are some good types of martial arts to take?

I know there are tons of them out there so I don’t even know where to start for looking into it all.
Looking to continue to get in better physical shape mainly along with learning new things and also will be able to be ready for anything that could happen if necessary because I would consider myself in good physical shape but if anything happened to where I came across anybody in decent shape with experience I probley wouldn’t come out on top

It depends on what you’re looking for in a martial art.
If you want something that looks good and gives a moderate workout, tai chi or aikido work well.
If you want a serious cardio workout, boxing and kickboxing gyms will run you ragged.
If you want a practical style for self-defense, look for one that spars with full or nearly full contact with reasonably unrestricted rules, such as boxing, Kyokushin karate, or Muay Thai.
If you want something to instill self-discipline and give you a sense of achievement, go into the more regimented Japanese schools, like most forms of karate.

If you want a style that gets close to the opponent and wrestles, look for Judo, Greco-Roman wrestling, Brazilian Jujutsu, or Shuai jiao. These are good if you are short and/or solidly built.
If you want a style that stays far away from the opponent and strikes, look for karate, Northern styles of kung fu, taekwondo, Muay Thai, or boxing. These are good if you are tall and/or lankily built.

Above all, see what’s in your area and visit each of them in turn. Finding a school with an instructor and class you feel comfortable with is more important than finding the ‘right’ style.

Edit: Judging by the additional information you provided, I would recommend any of the styles I listed under practical self-defense.

Where can a complete and detailed dvd or book of shotokan karate katas (basic & advanced) be found/purchased?

I had my share of shotokan kata trainings but unfortunately i forgot all of them after a long 4 years of working. I need to get back in shape and hone my reflexes for better life and health.

You can go to any Martial Arts store or look in most Black Belt magazines which will give you Nakamura’s Katas of Shotokan, or Ken Funakoshi.

The best place is a JKA School or traditional Shotokan Dojo
Books and tapes are a poor way to learn only because there is no one with an expert eye to watch your mistakes and correct you or teach you the Bunkai (Application) of the form

There are still GREAT Senseis alive for you to study with like Nishiyama, Harada, Kanazawa, Ohshima, Kawanabe, etc

Good luck and never give up.

good martial arts exercises?

can somebody suggest me some good martial arts exercises for a female using a male partner …

A few rounds on the heavybag, with v-sits or some other exercise between rounds. Hunt the bag as if it were a person, practice punching, elbows, parrying, blocking, kicking and moving. Not only will you hone your punching and moving skills, it’s also a great workout.

I have seen "martial artist" types fail in both endurance and fluidity when practicing with this simple, time proven tool. Start with two minute rounds and go to three minute rounds.

i need to stretch for martial arts?

are there any realy good free instuctional videos and/or e-books on the web that can help me achieve full front/back and side splits? my hamstrings are retty flexible but i need to do full splits. Please help!

You can achieve your flexibility goals by practicing the most basic stretches, but do them correctly and often–at least 3 times per day, no "bouncing" –Sit with your legs out to the sides and just stretch over each leg and the middle–keep your toes flexed (pointing straight up) and raise your arms above your head. Then do the same with your toes pointed. Also stretch with your legs together straight out in front of you and bending down forward over your legs, slowly, with toes pointed then flexed. Remember to keep your arms over your head and do not "bounce", this can pull your muscles. And consistancy is the key–these are very basic stretches but they work well with discipline, accuracy and persistance. They have always worked for me, even after a 3-year hiatus from martial arts and having 2 kids, I am now doing all 3 full splits. Good luck.

do young women in Korea like to study Tae Kwon Do or other Martial arts?

I had an ESL student from Korea named MIn Hee, she was tall and mild mannered, yet she did a kick that could have knocked a person out cold. She did this during break time, I was the teacher and yes I am sure I gave her an A+ for the class. I did not want to got to the hospital…So do some/ many women take TKD or martial arts in South Korea, I am wondering??

I’m a young adult woman and I take Taekwondo. 1/4 of the class is usually young girls. I know a lot of parents put their daughters in Taekwondo if they feel they are very shy and quiet. I guess they think it might get them out of their shell. A lot of girls are just into martial arts so they take Taekwondo.
