what are some types of martial art kias?

I know that in martial arts, to summon more power, practitioners yell (kia). I have herd many types of kias but not one that best fits me. What are some different types of kias?

What you yell is definitely important however it is secondary to how you yell. That is until you become a more seasoned practitioner. Sounds affect the human body in different ways. Buddhist chants and even Christian hymns have a mental or physiological effect but I am getting off the subject. The basic idea is to add the contraction of the diagram to the stiffening or tightening of the body. It can be done in two parts, a smooth exhale to start and then a secondary abrupt exhale that stops the breath almost completely but just for an instant. The well known "ki-ai" uses this method. The "T" sound like in shouT can use the tongue to help stop the exhale and the end of a technique. Hissing like a snake is a definite mistake. There are a lot of philosophical ideas that go into "spirit yells" but some don’t have any worth.

There are other sounds and methods of breath power but I would be here all day writing them. A good school should know at least two of these methods and should be able to teach them.

  1. If you do short and fast shots then a quick shh like exhale is good. If you’re a heavy hitter growl your lungs out!

  2. The focus isn’t on what you say. It’s main focus is to get you to exhale and startle your opponent. Next time your practicing just shout the first sound that comes out, and switch it up every once in a while to keep from getting caught up in the word alone

While it’s generally accepted in modern martial arts that the Kiai is whatever works for you, there are references to specific kiai with specific meanings. For example, in the soujutsu (spear skills) section of Kukishin ryu, there are three different kiai: YAAH! AAH! and TOH!

I don’t recall precisely which was which (I don’t have my notebook in front of me), but one was to halt an attackers advance, one was to lead the attacker to believe you found an opening, and, if I remember correctly, the last was to lead the attacker to lose his will to fight.

Hope this helps shed a little more light on kiai.

find one that works for you and use that. i hear in classes kia, iya (which is like the one i do), kya, and others like those so just experiment with yours and find one that you like and comes naturally. when i was in XMA we said a kiai that sounded like ice toes, it was really weird and i didnt like it. but what i tell the kids in class short but sweet so dont drag out your kia too long.

A kiai, any kiai, should be short, fast, and a quick exhale of breath.
However, don’t kiai on every strike, it doesn’t neccessarily need to be ear splitting.

What you physically say honestly doesn’t matter. I felt stupid myself at first, but you’ll find something. Try out different things during a kata if you want: Kiai, Hai, just breathing out.etc..etc

it doesnt matter what you say however dont use hai, in japanese it means yes and if you ever train with anyone that speaks japanese they’ll laugh at you, just as you would laugh if someone started randomly yelling yes in the middle of a kata

  9. there are advanced forms of sounds and breathing, hung gar teaches them

they train the internal organs and internal body, they generate vibrations that enhance power

but they must be done properly, not just mimicked

    ROTFLMAO!!!

I nominate this as the thread that exposes the ones who know from the rest.

I had a rough time getting to the office this morning but this just gave me a good laugh.

Only one person has made any sense and he is the guy right above me.

It does matter what sound you make. They correspond with the internal organs thus enhancing power.
