maybe fencing is the martial arts that requires you to do the splits.

Kung Fu, modern Wushu, Taek Won Do and probably a few more require flexibility and agility. Flexibility and agility in martial arts though they may not be required are still an advantage no matter what style you are taking. While fencing does not require a split to my knowledge, agility will certainly be an advantage when evading or moving in.

It is great when a person can do the splits, don’t know if it is a requirement,it is more a show of flexibility, you can kick higher. It is fine to have the ability, but not good on the streets;if you kick high, they go low(worse for a male).Keep kicks low, thigh level and lower.
