This kata was developed around 1663 in the Okinawan Islands. It is a mix of Shaolin and Shokei (not “Shorei”) styles–the “quick” and “hard.” It is considered to be one of the most refined, mature katas–it has no contradictory, unclear, or unhealthy movements (ref: “Notes on Training”/Amazon.com). If one can’t make a clean stepping punch (oizuki), this will be a very challenging kata for them. It is recommended for those with problems with knees, legs, or arms. Here, I’m working on this–the required kata for our 3rd degree test. I don’t consider myself to fully know this very difficult kata–I’m at about “50%.” It’s the most difficult kata I’ve ever attempted (with Gankaku and Kanku close seconds). I’ll add updates as I learn this very difficult form, and add any “gems of wisdom” I pick up. Google “kengland4″ for my review of “Karate-do Kyohan”–the “Bible” of karate, as well as other martial arts books, movies, etc. Practice hard!!!

I started inside our dojo, at CSULB, but had to finish outside, as a salsa class arrived. I’m only halfway through the reps needed to learn this kata. http://tinyurl.com/obwec3 has a very good, vintage video of this (youtube), with applications.
Stretching is essential for Kung Fu mastery; learn Kung Fu forward stretches taught at real Shaolin temples in this free martial arts video series.

In order for any Martial Art techniques to be effective, one must train ones body diligently. These exercises that I am showing can be done outdoors or indoors with a very minimal need for equipment. As a Martial Artist you should always have the ability to train your body at any location without the need of weights or equipment.

Lesson #1: Warming Up (2009 Freddie’s Modern Kung Fu)
Depending on the disciple, if more cardio training is required, there exercises can be utilized for cardio training, the time just has to be extended to 20, 30, 40, 50 min. or even longer, depending on how much cardio training you desire. But before every 2 hour training, it is a necessity that we always warm up for at least 10 min.

Robert Clyne is very interested in understanding how the Shaolin Monks use Chi or Chi Gong exercises to perform seemingly impossible feats. Liu Gao Jie shows Antonio Graceffo how he does the Chi exercise, but stresses that Chi is no replacement for actual, normal physical training. He also says that this type of Chi preparation and power cant e used in a San Da fight.

Lesson #3: Stretching Part 2 (2009 Freddie’s Modern Kung Fu)
Here Aaron is demonstrating the various stretches that we do. This video is simply a demo. so he is not holding each stretch the proper amount of time. Each stretch must be held for a minimal of 30 seconds. Depending on each disciple, some who are extremely inflexible may have to stretch after warmup and after the entire training session. Other disciples who are more flexible may only have to stretch at the end of the training session. If each stretch is held for at least 30 seconds, the entire stretching portion should last at a minimal of 20 min. Many times it will last close to 30 min. or longer.
Stretching is extremely important to become proficient in the Martial Arts, this aspect cannot be ignored, otherwise greatness will never be achieved in the Martial Arts.
Freddie has founded Freddies Modern Kung Fu in 2009, a private Martial Arts Academy located in Chicago, IL that expresses his interpretation of Bruce Lees Jeet Kune Do. This art is non-commercialized and is in its purest form. All techniques are scientifically proven to be effective and all techniques are aimed towards unarmed street survival combat. Freddie hand selects disciples to personally train that have the proper discipline and compassionate heart to become successful in this art.
