Do you guys think women should learn martial arts to protect themselves from rapists and attackers?
I strongly believe they should, especially if they want to be police officers, security guards, bodyguards, etc. A lot of people believe that for women, martial arts are nothing more than a thing political correctness, and brute strength and being over 6 ft. is everything, and they’re taught their only defense is a man like her father, Marine boyfriend, whatever. Many women are also taught to believe they should stay away from what is considered men’s activities like martial arts. I totally disagree with that traditional way of thinking, although it still very much exists. Martial arts aren’t just about the ability to fight, but also learning self confidence. Most arts aren’t so much about having big ripped muscles, it’s more about inner strength, fighting skill, and spirit and resolve. A girl being a great fighter and protector takes much more than strength and pain, in fact even more so than a man.
True strength comes from within.
Yes i think they should but MAs arent for everyone. I have 3 neices and i want them to learn MAs but its up to them to want to learn it.

what kind of community do you live in?
in my dojo, we have girls who train, just for the fun of it, older women who train for the exercise, and they all appreciate the self defense aspect as well, but most communities around the US any way, don’t act/think the way you’re talking about.

I think so too.
And travisty, that attitude does exist. Props that it doesn’t exist in your dojo, but your dojo isn’t every dojo.

everyone has the right to learn to defend themselves….thats all that really needs to be said.
the problem is alot of arts take too long to learn, or teach some kind of happy horse shit and put it off as self defense.
women especially need specialized self defense training, rather than a "martial art" …thats not to say they shouldn’t train in a martial art. but there are better, faster ways of learning self defense. i agree with the importance of the art dealing with avoidance and prevention as well as pepper spray, keys, purses, and other make shift weapons.
