Japanese Jujutsu and Shiatsu / Massage and Martial Arts

Footage from our March 21, 2009 class. Saturday classes typically involve four-plus hours of jujutsu (lots of ukemi) followed by shiatsu, since we learn and practice both disciplines. As a result, we can (usually ;-) fix what gets tweaked on the mat, which is a nice perk.

For those familiar with Hakkoryu / Hakko Denshin Ryu / KoKoDo Jujutsu, the following tachi-waza from shodan-ge are featured in the video: Hakko-Nage (a couple interpretations considered to be kihon), Kubi-Shime-Dori and Ushiro-Zeme-Otoshi (mostly henka from a rear arm choke).

Unlike most of our videos to date, the techniques shown in this video are kihon waza (the formal pre-arranged techniques that make up the system’s syllabus) or pre-determined vs. on-the-fly variations (henka) of the waza.

As with much of the other material we’ve posted and will post to YouTube, this video depicts students achieving training goals with varying degrees of success, vs. simply serving as a “best-of” highlight reel for our school. Our goals in doing so are to properly represent the realities of training in self-defense-oriented martial arts, and help you form reasonable expectations should you one day choose to train with us. Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to share our passion for jujutsu with you!

  6. Again, thank you. I …
Again, thank you. I certainly do plan to provide additional footage in new videos that further explore shiatsu and its relationship to jujutsu in our system, which should help people form more comprehensive opinions.

This video was largely designed to capture what happened during a given class on a given day; and so what’s depicted, i.e. which techniques are shown by which students, and who’s performing and receiving shiatsu, were luck of the draw.

  7. I agree fully …
I agree fully however it is the perseption of the joe public I refer to from which you draw your student base. it is not my perception to be concerned about, as I understand whats going on and whats involved, the public may perceive it entirely differently. Myu suggestion was a way in which you can still get across ur msg without misconception which could be highly damaging. its just a suggestion and requires no vindication or explanation after all its your show sir.

  8. Your point is well …
Your point is well taken, especially since you are addressing the perceptions of laypeople.

But I will appeal to your sensibilities as a martial arts veteran and sensei and reiterate what we’ve come to know (and others need to understand): the trust that this student must develop for any sempai or sensei must be earned by the senior practitioner over time, which is true here. And, arguably she must have more trust when taking jujutsu ukemi (see “Ukemi #1″), where her life is truly in jeopardy.

  9. I am still in the …
I am still in the midst of responding to your comments my friend! But you’re welcome, and again thank you in return.

I look forward to future dialog with you, as few YouTubers bring your level of articulation to the martial arts niche!

  10. You are right. He …
You are right. He was out of line, but I sensed his frustration lies outside of anything he’s watched on my channel.

My goal was to use ju in written verbal form to see if I could salvage something positive from the interaction with TENNSUMITSUMA (a lesson to our students following this thread). Turns out his fight really wasn’t with me, so it wasn’t difficult, and I hope he’s better off going forward. Thank you again TimA340 for helping further the discussion he started. Lemons into lemonade.

  11. Sir in conclusion …
Sir in conclusion after reading all ur responses here I will say this u are truly an excellent representative of the art of JJ. Your attitudes, calm demeanor and respectful nature is something only cultivated in the field of Martial arts through many years of experience. Your student are very lucky to learn from someone who posesses these life skill. ur JJ is sound but it is not for me to judge but to simply appreciate ur invitation for me to observe them. Ty Sir for your hospitality. Dewa mata

  13. . . . Now, there is …
. . . Now, there is a henka of this technique in which the tori forgoes the tai-sabaki and creates an ude-juji-gatame, allowing for a subsequent manipulation of one forearm to the other side of the neck while keeping the lower arm trapped underneath: this facilitates the opportunity for a kote-jime, as you rightly observed (finish is otoshi driving the back of the head / kabuto into the ground from the kote-garame/-jime, so the attacker ends up in the same position as the kihon waza)!

  14. Worthwhile point of …
Worthwhile point of discussion. The atemi in the first technique comes from the attacker’s own arm being drawn into his/her face: i.e. so it would be a kote-atemi to the menpo in koryu terms. The idea is to underscore that atemi can be delivered by the tori, or the uke’s body manipulated to attack itself. . . .

  15. TimA340-san — …
TimA340-san — Thank you for your comprehensive and forthright comments. You are of course correct in your clarifications regarding the history of BJJ / GJJ.

My hope regarding my dialog with TENNSUMITSUMA on this comment thread was to, as you have, provide education that may be beneficial to him as well as to others reading the thread: the evolution of the jujutsu branch that lead from koryu to BJJ is an interesting one — I covered the former, you covered the latter here. Thank you! . . .

  16. Im somewhat …
Im somewhat confused 1st tech shows no atemi in fact its Kote jime creating Kuzushi then tai Sabaki to a version of shiho Nage Ryote Ude Gatame and Irimi Nage Ura.This in fact could almost be classified as a tenchi Nage ura, So to say
atemi etc is kind of confusing to me. JMO

  17. Sir u need to do …
Sir u need to do better homewrk Gracies did not copy verbatim they recd info from Maeda who was primarily judoka w/ JJ training therefore most GJJ is judo based w/ JJ techniques incorporated. This is far from vebatim. I think Im somewhat qualified to say what I am having trained in JJ since 69 and BJJ since 82. My pt is GJJ has its place and JJ has its place one is the tree the other is the branch.

  18. im absolutely …
im absolutely amazed this instructor would even respond to ur ? when u talk with that kind of trash. u obviously need to learn some sort of Martial arts just to discipline your life and ur mouth. Secondly because if u tlk that way on the street ur gonna be defending urself alot. Personally if u came to me with that ? in that manner I’d just remove it block u and move on and snd u a pvt msg saying learn some manners /respect.
In my opinion u havent earned the right to see this mans techniques.

  19. Just a suggestion, …
Just a suggestion,to avoid any possible inuendos you may want to remove the female receiving shiatsu from older male teacher portion and change it to a group of students varying in age practicing the Shiatsu methods. he way it could be perceived is everyones left and this older Instructor is giving a private Shiatsu massage to a much younger female student. Could conjure up position of authority issues etc. I think would crate a better overall perception with same goal achieved JMO

  20. Excellent! As long …
Excellent! As long as a portion of your training involves random / unscripted attacks in which the attacker (usually called “uke” in Japanese martial arts) is allowed to resist as well as use training weapons, aikido can be a very practical martial art (and a decent workout — the ukemi alone will strengthen your body over time).

Ah sorry for such a late reply, but I also like the Martial arts for the Self Defense. PLUS since I’m in a sport in highschool, i’d wanna stay active. (:

  22. Your brother’s …
Your brother’s advice is good (what you mentioned is the key tactical objective in aikido). But in addition to that, how do YOU personally hope to benefit from your training (for me, it’s self defense)?

In fact, the founder of aikido and the founder of Hakkoryu (on which our jujutsu is based) studied the same style of jujutsu before creating their own arts, so you may see many similarities (check out “Jujutsu Jazz #2″ on my channel — several of those techniques have equivalents in aikido).

from what my brother had told me, I really want to learn how to use more of the energy of your opponent against him instead of your own.

  24. Aikido’s definitely …
Aikido’s definitely a good art for many people. What is it you want to get out of studying martial arts?
